1999 A Very Memorable Moment- Lady Razorback Basketball

A Blast From The Past: The amazing highlights of a very special Arkansas Lady Razorback basketball player- Treva Christensen. This was a very memorable game for Treva because it was against Top-Five ranking Stanford and a game that would name Treva- The Player of the Game.

But, the most significant part of this whole evening was that Treva got the opportunity to showcase her outstanding bball skills/talent in front of her biggest idol of all-time, Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller. Definitely a big moment to remember in the year 1999. :)

Life is not about all the steps you have taken, or all the places you have been, it's about the footprints you leave behind. You made your mission successful in basketball because you had the heart/passion, confidence, courage, and the determination to be the best YOU could possibly be! You have been an inspiration to so many, and I know you continue to be an inspiration in all that you do now! You are awesome!!!

Where Does Your Inspiration Come From

It can be very difficult to stay motivated due to obstacles and challenges you face each and every day....UNFORTUNATELY, THAT IS HOW LIFE WORKS! But, YOU must believe that you have what it takes to overcome any obstacle or challenge.

Look around you...there is inspiration and motivation all around you. You must be able to recognize it and apply it to your life. People come in and out of our life everyday....some stay for awhile, while others are there for a short time. Try to learn from others and through your experiences (good and bad). Each experience, relationship, and challenge will shape you and push  you to get motivated or inspire you to overcome difficulties.

You will come across people that have overcome seemingly impossible difficulties, people who follow their dreams into uncharted territory, people who rise to incredible heights of achievement and success.

Everyone has a story and EVERYONE has overcome something. Tell your story and always be yourself...you get INSPIRATION from one person and then you are an inspiration to another person. It is quite a fascinating pattern.

Never stop searching for your spiritual fulfillment, creative expression, and deep satisfaction in life.

Your Thirst

I came across this question along with this quote and I just had to share it with you. I believe that most of you will appreciate it and find its true meaning for YOURSELF.

How can you tell the dreamer from the dream?

"I've been having this recurring vision...In it, there's this fish tank--it calms me. I see a small speck floating on the water, and I look closer, it's me...I'm atop the waves. There's water as far as the eye can see, yet I can't drink. Not a drop. I taste salt in my mouth. I taste the bile. My thirst is great and it hangs around my neck like a chain. Eventually the weight drags me under. I'm drowning...I struggle, flail, kick... Then suddenly, I sense the familiar cold, hard hand of iron. I grab hold and pull myself up. This world is a vast sea but one thing remains fixed, constant...This iron. This calling. This THIRST."

It Doesn't Have To Be Hard

Where did so many of us get the idea if we are too happy, something terrible is going to happen? We can't enjoy ourselves, can't let out guard down because we think that being hyper vigilant will protect us. It's magical thinking to believe that we can ward off disaster by not being too happy.

As the great philosopher Epictetus reminds us, "When considering the future, remember that all situations unfold as they do regardless of how we feel about them." We can exercise caution and care, we can plan and scheme, but to a great extent, life unfolds on a grander scale than all our scheming. Worry will do nothing to change the outcome.

It doesn't have to be hard. It's OK if it is easy.

Smile Now Cry Later

SMILE NOW CRY LATER…

Smile- To Act Happy When Everyone Is Around You.
Cry- When You Are All Alone.
Smile- To Put On A Brave Face Each And Every Day.
Cry- It Hurts So Bad...Deep Inside Nobody Knows.
Smile- You Are Trying To Do The Best You Can And You Are Not Giving Up.
Cry- To Have To Fight Day In And Day Out.
Smile- To Have Positive Thoughts For The First Time In A Long Time.
Cry- It Is Still Too Hard To See With All This Pain Deep Within You.

Smile Now Cry Later…Is What Life Is All About. Holding onto life tightly and afraid to let go. Life is short and is full of grief and pain. To put a smiling face on and face what needs to be done and at the same time face your truth- the battle cry and confusion of your unknown. Find out for yourself what is true, so that you are able to face the world with the ability to understand yourself and your purpose in this world.

Pleasure and Pain Exist For The Other. Instead Of Opposites, They Are Complementaries And Each Is A Function Of The Other. If You Had Not Felt Pain, How Can You Distinguish Pleasure?

To Be Whole, Let Yourself Break. To Expand, You Must Shrink. To Strengthen, You Must First Weaken. To Raise Up, You Must Be Knocked Down. You Win By Losing. You Lose By Winning. You Smile By Crying. You Cry By Smiling.

STAY STRONG!!!

Have Internal Strength

I want to touch on the concept of mental toughness...mind over matter. I have always believed that it is important that you find your mind-set...your mental toughness.  We all have it, but most of us don't want to endure the physical pain in order to train your mind to be tough. It is a challenging process, and it will definitely test your willpower.

I was reading this book and I just had to share the story of the MIND OVER MOUNTAIN with you. I was instantly fascinated and got so excited to blog this story.  It is one thing to have strength in fitness, but it is a whole new ball game when you have internal strength that will affect you in any situation.  And it is this type of strength that has the power to transform your physical performance.  So the story goes like this, The Tendai, also known as the marathon monks, of Japan's sacred Mount Hiei display an amazing illustration of mental toughness.  Over a seven-year period during their training, these monks test the limits of their endurance far beyond what had been thought possible.  They are expected to run 52 miles every day for a 100-day period--that's two marathons back to back. It is stated that such a feat is staggering but it's possible because of the INNER STRENGTH of the monks. A Tendai monk's running style during those seven years consists of focusing 100 feet in front of him while moving to a continuous rhythm of chant, and keeping his body, especially his head and shoulders, relaxed. And during the fifth year, each monk participates in an ancient running ritual by sitting and chanting mantras for nine days, without sleep or food.

As you can see, it is a very intense process and many of you may not  feel the need to prove yourself at that level, which is fine.  The lesson to be learned here is that you can't find your own way of preparing for something through internal strength. I think it is neat to hear how others take on challenges and find their own way of making the impossible possible. The monk's ability to train their minds and harness their inner strength is unparalleled. I think it is important to hear and understand other people's experiences.  We always hear about the world's greatest athletes and the way they persevered to the top through intense training and determination. BUT we don't usually hear about other individuals...like the monks.  When in reality, the life of the monk may hold the greatest secrets of all.  The desire to win might not be their main motivation, but they reach their goals because of their high level of DISCIPLINE and BELIEF in their own bodies to perform.

So try to apply some of these techniques to your own training and running regimen.  I have always believed it is never a bad thing to incorporate other things that may help you get better.  You never know, chanting during your runs, may make your minutes turn into seconds and, rather than getting increasingly bored during a run, you may feel alive and may find yourself moving steadily toward enlightenment.

Commit To The Journey Of Fitness

"There are no shortcuts."
One morning a young man in his twenties came in & enrolled at the gym. Looking around, he saw an older man across the room, working out. His face and physique didn't seem to go together. His gray head was that of a well-kept septuagenarian, but his body seemed grafted on-impossibly young looking. In his sweatpants and tank shirts he exposed arms and shoulders revealed full, deeply defined muscles covered with smooth, tight skin. There wasn't an ounce of fat on him. Awestruck, the young man walked over to him and said, "You look great, how long have you been working out?" The old man gave him a fierce look and replied, "All my damned life-you're looking at a LIFETIME of working out!"

With the long-term pursuit of fitness, however, weight loss, or fat loss, takes care of itself-automatically. Again, to achieve it you must not pursue it! The object is not to lose weight but to become fit. You must commit yourself to the journey of fitness, which is going to bring you rewarding results for a lifetime. You must stop wanting immediate results or a quick turnaround.

It is all up to YOU. YOU are the one, YOU are the captain of your ship, YOU lead the way, but most importantly, YOU are the footprints that lead you on your journey.

Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Branch out of your comfort zone. While any and all physical activity is a good, beneficial thing, challenging yourself will provide even more advantages. So, don't shy away from a new type of exercising or from increasing your intensity. For example, if you normally use the treadmill, get off the machine and try a group class. Or, if you run every day for an hour instead cut the time but increase how fast you run. Whatever it is that you normally do, change it up. Be Fearless! You Have What It Takes!!!!!

Be In Tune With Your Body

"My philosophy is that not only are you responsible for your life, but doing the best at this moment puts you in the best place for the next moment."
-Oprah Winfrey

The term responsibility means, "the ability to respond." In any of life's challenges, opportunities, or disasters, we can respond in whatever way we choose. It is this response that dictates what life hands us next. I think it is extremely important to note that in addition to what we can do physically about a situation, we also have the ability to choose what our inner response to that situation is. The idea is that: We control our emotional reaction to the external environment-THE EXTERNAL ENVIRONMENT DOESN'T.

Our inner life reflects our outer, and our outer life reflects our inner. It is so important to make changes in both. When a situation arises, ask yourself."What response can I make-inner, outer, or both-that would get me closer to my goal?" Again, it is so crucial to recognize all areas of our self...it is your responsibility to understand and to change things that may prevent you from reaching your goals and your dreams.
Like I have told everyone in my life...BE IN TUNE WITH YOUR BODY IN EVERY WAY THAT IS POSSIBLE...SO YOU CAN COMPLETE ANY CHALLENGE/OBSTACLE THAT MAY BE PUT IN FRONT OF YOU!

You have all the opportunities for greatness...it happens every day, every minute!

Your Temple...

Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own."
-Kurt Vonnegut

Your body is truly your instrument to life, it is your TEMPLE. It is important to truly understand that it is not just what is on the outside, but what lives inside you. Your spirit, mind, and soul...YOUR HEART. All these components work together to shape the person that you are...you must have a relationship with your body and self-respect in order for you body to produce tremendous achievements.

For example, I began playing basketball at an early age. I, of course, loved the sport, but I had a desire to play with everything I had inside me. I wanted to excel and give 100% every time I stepped on the court. These characteristics were never for the glory and rewards (don't get me wrong, it is always nice to be a top player or play on a team that was one of the best in the state)...but it was deeper for me. It was my spirit and my passion to get better, to never give up, and to set goals. I ALWAYS PLAYED WITH MY HEART.

The reason I share this with you is because I feel that when you do things in your life with YOUR HEART, you will excel in everything that is in front of you. Now understand that there may be things that you have to work harder at or be patient with, but I truly believe with HEART anything is POSSIBLE.

DEFINITION OF EXERCISES/LANGUAGE IN EXERCISE

1) Straight-legged to Heels-to-Butt Sit-ups- lie flat on the ground with your legs straight and your hands on your head. As you start to do a sit-up bring your heels in to your butt and tap the floor (*the closer the heels come to the butt the harder). As you come out of your sit-up and begin to roll-down straighten out your legs and make sure the heels touch the floor. It should be a smooth, contolled one motion.
2) Burpee In Place-start by jumping straight in the air and then landing in a squat position with hands on the ground. Kick your feet back into the downward position of a push-up. Thrust the feet up and push up with the arms simultaneously.
3) Traveling Forward Burpee- the same concept as the Burpee In Place the only difference is jump forward instead of straight up.
4) Traveling Backward Burpee- the same concept as the Burpee In Place the only difference is jump backward instead of jumping straight up.
5) Burp- also known as a stripped down burpee. Start low and tucked toward the floor. Kick feet out to the bottom portion of a pushup. Then, push with your hands, while thrusting the feet back to the beginnning position (which is low and tucked toward the floor). It is only a half way motion minus without the jump in the air.
6) M.B. or Plate Stand-Ups- lie flat on the ground with your feet planted on the ground. Beginners should use two dumbbells and place on feet. Hold a m.b. or plate over your head (*the heavier the db/plate the easier...the lighter the db/plate or no weight the harder). Quickly move your arms forward and start to sit up. It is very important that you use your arms for momentum and engage your abdominals. Once your arms pass your knees, quickly push forward with your legs, moving into a standing position.
7) Mountain Climbers- start with your body in a push-up plank position. With the hands stationary, alternate the feet back and forth. One leg should be tucked with the knee coming close to your chest and the opposite leg extended. Make sure to place your weight on the balls of the feet.
8) Grasshoppers- your body will begin in the same position you used for mountain climbers. The movement starts by bringing your left foot underneath the body until it touches your right hand. After touching your hand, return the left foot to the starting position and repeat the movement by bringing your right foot across the body to your left hand. You will be on the balls of your feet but when you bring your foot toward your hand you will land on the side of your foot.
9) Wall Sit- place yourself up against a wall and squat down until the thighs are parallel to the floor. Think about forming an L with the bottom portion of your body. Your back is supported against the wall. Hold this position for time. Do not place your hands on your thighs because this takes off the pressure in your legs. Absolutely no movement with this exercise.
10) Bridge- a great exercise that will develop strength and flexibility. It is a static hold that helps improve lower back strength. Start by lying down on the floor with your knees bent and your hands on the floor close to your ears. Lift yourself up with your abdomen pointing upward and with only the hands and the feet on the floor. Your body should create an arched position and you will maintain the upright position for time.
11) Aerobic exercise- means with oxygen. An activity in which demands of muscle for oxygen are met by circulation of oxygen in blood. Distance running, cross-country, skiing, distance cycling are all examples of aerobic activities.
12) Anaerobic Exercise- means without oxygen. Activity in which oxygen demands of muscles are so high that they rely upon an internal metabolic process for oxygen. Short burts of "all-out" activities such as sprinting or weightlifting are examples of anerobic exercises.
13) Burn- also known as "going for the burn." For instance, in endurance exercise, working muscles until lactic acid buildup causes a burning sensation.
14) Concentric- when muscles contract or shorten.
15) Delts- an abbreviation for deltoids, the large triangular muscles of the shoulder which raise the arm away from the body and perform other functions.
16) Eccentric- when muscles lengthen while maintaining tension.
17) Fast-Twitch- refers to muscle cells that fire quickly and are utilized in anaerobic activites like sprinting and powerlifting.
18) Glycogen- can be referred to as a full tank full of stored carbohydrates. Some of it is stored in the liver and some of it is stored in the muscles themselves.
19) Hybrid Lift- is two or more exercise done in one single movement. It is the inverse of a combo lift. For istance, performing a bicep curl while lunging.
20) Interval Training- is a short, high-intensity cardio exercise alternated with longer periods of lower-intensity cardio. It allows you to burn more calories, increase your speed, improve your power, and much more. It is more effective at burning fat while maintaining muscle mass. Combine this type of training with intensity will also increase your metabolic rate to amazing levels. This is because the work you do utilizes a greater percent of the body's muscles.
