1999 A Very Memorable Moment- Lady Razorback Basketball

A Blast From The Past: The amazing highlights of a very special Arkansas Lady Razorback basketball player- Treva Christensen. This was a very memorable game for Treva because it was against Top-Five ranking Stanford and a game that would name Treva- The Player of the Game.

But, the most significant part of this whole evening was that Treva got the opportunity to showcase her outstanding bball skills/talent in front of her biggest idol of all-time, Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller. Definitely a big moment to remember in the year 1999. :)

Life is not about all the steps you have taken, or all the places you have been, it's about the footprints you leave behind. You made your mission successful in basketball because you had the heart/passion, confidence, courage, and the determination to be the best YOU could possibly be! You have been an inspiration to so many, and I know you continue to be an inspiration in all that you do now! You are awesome!!!

LOVE WINS

The nature of love is one of the most complex things to comprehend. One of my favorite quotes by Bruce Lee is: "If one loves, one need not have an ideology of love." Instead, love--true love--is a state or condition of being wherein the activities of the self have ceased. And in order to experience this state, an understanding of the workings of the self in all of its many varieties of consciousness is required."

You must think of love as a mutual experience of the body and the mind. When you love you must believe on one level that there is something constant about the body (physical constant) and that this physical constant is inherently and intrinsically enduring and tightly "connected" to what you perceive to be the identity of the person you love, the activity you love, or even the object you love.

However, we do change or better yet...we are change, as it is our ability to change with the change. Bruce Lee referred to this as "the changeless state." In order to have success in the people and things you love you must have its experience transcend your physical body...in order for love to evolve, you must experience the powerful emotional state as well.

In the case that the emotion of love is not present, a state of not being able to change with change results in a changed state, this will often lead to "growing apart." We must allow things in our life to evolve in its natural process, which will bring a truly wonderful experience. We must often remind ourselves not to possess or cling to the physical world.

As mentioned, the physical world is itself illusory, you're engaging in non-reality-based behavior, and this will set you up for failure. Instead allow your experience of love to happen naturally, allowing you to "let go" by not clinging to it, you will find that your relationships, goals, everyday activities will not only become more interesting, but will grow into a very strong unity of body, mind, and spirit.

Love can only exist in an environment that is free of ego--where one has forgotten oneself. To Bruce Lee, one did not have or possess "love" but rather lived the emotion in the present to the fullest possible degree and reveled in the experience of it. When love surrounds you, it becomes a tremendous physical, mental, and spiritual experience.

"Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning, a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep burning and unquenchable."-Bruce Lee

You must value happiness and know that happiness in relationships, family, workplace, everyday activities should be derived, not from a whirlwind that involves an extreme emotional state, but from a more balanced relationship/behavior...remember that true Yin/Yang is expressed through temperance and moderation--not by running to extremes.

"Nothing can be secured by extremes...only sober moderation lasts, and that persists through all time. Only the mid-part of anything is preserved because the pendulum (of life) must have balance, and the mid-part is the balance," says Lee.

So I leave you with this thought...allow life to live through you, remember that to get the most out of life lies simply in your decision to live your life with the principle of balance and to learn to cooperate with the natural patterns of our world. Most importantly, let your career, relationships, and daily activities be harmonious expressions of who you truly are.

Trust Your Heart And Let It Lead You

I thought this blog entry was very appropriate considering that it is "Love Week" and all. :) Many of our actions and feelings come from our heart this week...but it shouldn't be just for this week. You must feel from your heart all the time. So my question to you is...What is your Heart Longing For?

This is a practice adapted from Contentment by Robert A. Johnson and Jerry M. Ruhl. Find a place to sit quietly for a few minutes. Take a few slow, deep breaths. Now think over the past week. What have you spent your time, energy, and money doing? How has each thing contributed to your happiness or not? Now, continue to breath calmly, turn your attention to your heart and ask, "What is my heart longing for?" Perhaps the answer will pop up immediately; perhaps it will surface later. If you do get an answer right away, compare it to your list of how you've been spending your time and money. Notice how you feel. Is there a way to invest more in what your heart is longing for?

We all have an opportunity to live with our hearts...you must discover what is inside you. Allow your heart to lead you. You must gather all the "stuff" necessary to overcome and succeed in life from THE INSIDE. It is only within you that you are going to find what you need and what really matters...PURPOSE. Everyone fears the unknown and what is truly inside them...DON'T be afraid. Trust your heart and let it lead you. IT IS UP TO YOU TO FIND IT!

Embrace And Share Your Gifts

There are so many gifts I want for you...

I'd like to give you the gift of wisdom, but that is something only the passing years can bring.
Id like to give you the gift of success, but that is something that only has true value if it is earned.
I'd like to give you the gift of happiness, but the path that leads you there is one you must find on your own.

But there is one gift that I can give you, and that is little tokens of encouragement and reassurance, which will give you the courage to find what you are looking for and what you can become. Believe in yourself and the strength that lives inside you. Embrace it and share it with the world. You are one of a kind...believe in the gifts that exist inside you.

Try, Try Again

Here is a lesson you should take notice of,
A lesson you should take to heart,
Try, try again;
If at first you don't succeed,
Try, try again;
It is then that your courage should appear,
For, if you will persevere,
You will conquer, and never fear,
So Try, try again;
Believe that one day you will see THE TRUTH.

BEST Break Dancer Ever!

I did a blog entry back in September 2012 about an inspiring guy who was born with polio and has been considered one of the best break dancer ever. Here is a recap about a guy named B-boy Junior, whose real name is Bosila Banya. He was born in Zaire, Central Africa and was born with polio. Polio (poliomyelitis) is a viral illness that damages nerves that control muscles, resulting in muscle weakness. In severe illnesses, a person can lose the ability to move both arms and legs (paralysis) and may be unable to breathe without help.

As a child, he always was on his hands performing tricks to impress friends and family. He moved to France when he was 5 and in 1997 he saw a TV show about break dancing. It was then that he realized that was what he wanted to do. Even though B-boy Junior's leg has polio, he pursued break dancing with dedication and was mentored by Jeff and Rudy (Top-Notch Break dancers). In 2001, he joined the wanted posse crew that soon gained popularity around the world.

He has since then won many battles and is considered to be the be the best break dancer in the world. He has accomplished his goal and dream of break dancing despite his handicap. Anyone has the ability to being the best that they can be...everyone is challenged in different ways. It is up to YOU to do what you want to do. Believe in YOU and your dreams. Don't ever give up on YOU. With hard work, dedication, determination anything is possible. So my challenge to YOU is to do something you have always wanted to do and DO IT!

Check out this video of B-boy Junior and see the amazing strength and power he shows doing something he loves to do...BREAK DANCE! Hope you enjoy.

SUBCONSCIOUS MIND

"Recognizing the influence of my subconscious mind over my power of will, I shall take care to submit to it a clear and definite picture of my major purpose in life and all minor purposes leading to my major purpose, AND I SHALL KEEP THIS PICTURE CONSTANTLY BEFORE MY SUBCONSCIOUS MIND BY REPEATING IT DAILY!!!!"  -Bruce Lee

Apply this to your everyday world.

Be A True Example Of Fitness...

Think of the pursuit of your dreams as being like a major athletic event. Train for it. As you prepare and "exercise," you will get stronger-mentally, emotionally, and physically. To successfully achieve your dream, you need to keep improving. The best way to do that is to...

*Keep your body fit.
*Keep your heart flexible.
*Keep your mind open.
*Keep your comfort zone expanding.

I want you to also step up and inspire the people around you. My challenge to you is to be a true example of fitness. Inspire three people in your life that may need some motivation, guidance, and support in regards to fitness. Help them truly understand what it means to make a fitness lifestyle change...and how that change will benefit them for the rest of their life. And last but not least, BE STRONG in everything that you DO! :)

It Has Been Said...

Bruce Lee was an amazing athlete and someone who I admire tremendously. He was known for his amazing skills, strength, and quickness in the martial arts world, but was also known for his mental toughness and his philosophy on life...

It has been said that Bruce Lee could:
* Jab his fingers through an unopened Coke can at a time when they were still made of steel.

*Bruce's striking speed from 3 feet away was 500th of a second.

*Bruce once caved in a protective headgear made from heavy steel rods, that had previously withstood several blows from a sledgehammer.

*Bruce could hold an elevated v-sit position for 30 minutes or longer.

*Bruce could use one finger to leave dramatic indentations on pine wood.

*Bruce could break wooden boards 6 inches thick.

*Bruce performed 50 reps of one-arm chin-ups.

Overcoming Obstacles And Being The Best

Hello Everyone...I hope everyone is doing well and staying fit. I want to share a very inspiring story that I happen to come across about four years ago. It is an inspiring story about a guy who overcame a challenge that was brought upon him at birth.

Make A Promise To Succeed

"Success consists of a series of little daily victories." - Laddie F. Hutar
"The secret of success is constancy to purpose." - Benjamin Disraeli

You must first understand that success is built upon failure after failure. In order to succeed at anything in life, you have to embrace failure in order to learn the valuable lessons along the way. You need to learn what to do and what not to do.

Success is all about being present in the moment. Understand that being present is when we realize that we are already perfect as we are. We are whole and unique individuals right at this moment. It is important to know that success is about understanding that the past is the past and has nothing to do with the present or the future EXCEPT for the power you give to it.

Make a promise to yourself: If you give into trust...if you make the commitment necessary to succeed and believe that you can...if you give this process your heart...you will succeed in whatever goals you are striving to attain.

Everyone wants to get to the winner's circle...and everyone should have the opportunity to get there. Make a conscious effort to do your part. The effort that you put into your promise will come back a hundredfold and will provide you with a lifelong way of exercising, healthy eating patterns, and a powerful spirit that will support one another, and most importantly support living a healthy lifestyle.

George, M. Body Express. p.13-14.

I Want To Know...

I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream
of meeting your heart's longing.

I want to know if you will risk
looking like a fool
for love
for your dream
for the adventure of being alive.

I want to know if you have touched
the center of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life's
betrayals
or have become shriveled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with
pain
mine or your own
with moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know if you can be joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the
tips of your
fingers and toes
without cautioning us to
be careful
be realistic to remember the limitations of
being human.

I want to know if you can disappoint
another
to be true to yourself.
If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with
failure,
yours or mine,
and still stand on the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full
moon,
"Yes!"

I want to know if you can get up
after the night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done.

I want to know if you will stand
in the center of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.

I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company
you keep
in the empty moments.

Open your hearts and minds to the possibilities of real surprises. Embrace everything around you and share your moments with everyone. Don't take any moment for granted. Each moment is apart of your life...each prepares you for the next moment to come!

The Moment My Life Changed Forever Part 2

The next day was a big reality check for me. I remember playing in high school...having concussions, pulling my back out, spraining my ankles and bouncing back. NOT THIS TIME...This was a totally different situation. Not only was it ten times the normal size due to the swelling but I could barely walk. My knee was upset!!! And it was showing me how upset!!!  I remember going to the training room and the trainers got right to work in trying to get the swelling down....from ice to the stem machine to light stretching. I was going to do whatever it took to get back out on the court...I wanted to be ready for my first SEC Tournament. Those two weeks prior to the tournament were such a blur...I remember the normal routine of icing and stem every single day. The trainers would then wrap up my whole leg and have me do cutting drills up and down the court (we still weren't sure the extent of my knee), to see if I would be ready to play in the tournament. I remember doing these drills up and down the court but the knee would just buckle on me. I would be able to run and cut a little then my knee would just give and buckle. I remember never losing hope and still believed that with some small miracle I would be ready to play in the SEC Tournament. It got closer to the Tournament and my knee just wasn't budging...I was so heartbroken. I did everything I was supposed to do and knew in my heart that my knee would be ready. MY KNEE WAS NEVER READY. I told myself I didn't have time to feel sorry for myself or to be upset...I would just have to deal with the card I was dealt and be there for my team. Cheer them on! I remember during the second half of the first game of the tournament, my coach paced up and down...looked over at me and said, "We could of used you today." I was speechless.

As soon as the SEC Tournament was over and my swelling was finally down, it was time for me to get an MRI and know the real damage done on my knee. I remember getting the MRI and feeling positive as I left the doctor's office. The coaches informed me that they would contact me in El Paso as soon as they knew the results (since I would be there for spring break). I was at home talking to my sister and my best friend when I received a phone call from my mother who was at her school working in her classroom. I remember her voice being a little shaky and she asked me if I could come by the school for a bit she had to talk to me about something very important.

I arrived at my mother's school and I remember her having such a heartbroken look on her face. I wasn't sure what this was all about but I was ready to hear what she had to say. She sat me down and she began to cry...she explained to me that the coaches had just called her and gave her the news that I had been waiting for...what seemed like a lifetime was now going to be my reality. Her voice got real low and she said that I had torn everything in my knee...the whole knee had exploded inside and the chances of me ever playing again were slim to none. She began to cry...she immediately grabbed me and hugged me tightly...I remember sitting there numb to the whole thing. I was in shock and could not comprehend the words that she had just told me. I remember her looking at me and asking me if I was okay, she reassured me that we would get through this. I looked at her and said, "I know, everything will be okay." I remember I was trying really hard to be strong for her...I didn't want her to feel worst than she did at that moment. I hated seeing my mom in so much pain because of me. I looked at my mom and said, "Mom...everything will be okay. You know me...it is hard to keep me down. They may say I will never play again but I really am the only one that knows if that is going to happen or not." My stubbornness began to shine bright...lol. My mom knew what that meant but her main concern was getting my knee better. I know she was hurt knowing that the love of my life (basketball) may be over for me...but just like any mother/parent, her main concern was my injury.

I remember driving back to my house and thinking that everything was just so surreal...I felt like I was in a nightmare and was going to wake up at anytime. I began to cry...and cry...and cry. It felt good to cry and really process everything that just happened. I remember telling myself..."It couldn't be that bad." All I could think about is my mom telling me that the coach was absolutely heartbroken and that the doctor specifically said..."It looked like a war zone in there." Wow...A WAR ZONE.  It was at this point I made a pact with myself that I was ready to take on this challenge. I was ready to do whatever it took to get back on that basketball court. WHATEVER IT TAKES! BRING ON THAT WAR ZONE!!!

Thank you so much for reading my story and I hope you stay tune for my Part 3...The Fight To Get Back On The Court. Thought for today is: Accept any challenge that is put in front of you. Turn any negative into a positive experience. Always see the GOOD out of something that is BAD. Never let ANYTHING stop you from doing what is in your HEART! Have an absolute wonderful day!

The Moment My Life Changed Forever Part 1

This is the story of a moment in my life that became both a learning and challenging experience. A time in my life that changed my outlook on everything in my life. A moment that is still a constant in my present life. A moment that if I could go back in time...I would never change. An experience that has shaped me into the person I am today.

So on with the story, a story that I have never truly discussed in detail until now. I have been an athlete all of my life. I have suffered through the devastating losses, all the extra practices, and all the injuries that go along with it....BLOOD, SWEAT, AND TEARS. I know what it takes to get to the next level...I knew that in order to be successful you must work hard, practice, and deal with the consequences that come along the way...all the challenges that all athletes have faced one time or another.

I received a full athletic scholarship to the University of Arkansas in 92-93. It was a very exciting moment for me...I was going to be able to do the one thing that I loved doing at the next level, especially in the SEC. The one thing that was always there for me from the third grade to my high school years...if I needed to express myself and/or take my mind off the things that were stressing me out basketball was there. It was always there...I could express my feelings through my ball handling drills or my one-on-one challenges with myself. I remember it being an exciting but scary moment to leave my hometown, El Paso, Texas and live in a new and unfamiliar place, Fayetteville, Arkansas. The beginning of my freshman year was interesting and a little overwhelming...I remember all the things that were expected of me as a student athlete. I didn't have time to think about anything but basketball and school....number of hours I needed to take, going to all my classes,  preseason workouts in the early morning and afternoon, study hall hours, meetings for new freshman, on and on and on. I remember in November of 1992...I was ready to go back home...I was sooooo homesick. I didn't realize how much my life was going to change so fast without my family and in a very unfamiliar place. I remember talking to my mom and she said, "Just stay strong, you will be home with family in December...everything will be ok." I got only three days off that December to be with my family and I remember having a heart-to-heart with my mom. I told her that I had no problem handling all the things being thrown at me...the hardest part was being so far from my family. She understood my words but assured me that things would get better just to continue to give it a chance, and if at the end of the year I was still homesick that I could just come home. That made me feel better but at the same time a part of me understood things in a different way...You have started something, you have committed yourself to something...you must finish this journey. And that was the end of that for me.

My freshman season was a very interesting and fulfilling one. I worked hard during and after practices on parts of my game that needed improvement at the college level. Each game and practice showed improvement which earned me a lot of playing time as back-up point guard to starting point guard, Shea Henderson. The last game of the season was finally here...and I remember it being such a huge deal not only because it was the last game of the season, but because it would also mark the last game played in Barnhill Arena (we would be playing in the new Bud Walton Arena the next year).

So here is the moment that would change my life forever...I was stretching before the game as usual along with my teammates...I do remember my legs being a little heavy at pre-game but didn't think anything of it...continued on with warm-up and was just astounded by the number of fans that came out to support us. The atmosphere was so amazing...the fans were AWESOME! That in itself was a very exciting moment for me. I remember Coach Sutherland putting me in the game right away (maybe 6 min had passed)...everything seemed fine as I went up and down the court a few times running the offense...playing hard on defense.

And then my moment came (the moment that was destined for me)...I remember stealing the ball and running up the middle of the court for a fast break. I remember a big girl jumping out in front of me to stop the fast break play. I did a crossover to avoid the charge and planted the foot to pass the ball off to Alyson Twiggs for the score...as I passed the ball I heard a snap and fell to the ground...right on top of the HOG'S NOSE...I remember keeping my eyes on Twiggs to make sure that we scored...THE CROWD ROARED...SCORE. And then I looked down to my knee. My kneecap had twisted to the side of my leg...I remember trying to stand up...pushing my heel down to get up..but I couldn't. I had nothing there. The knee seemed dislocated and not sure what was going to happen at this point. I was carried off the court and taken straight to the training room. As I stood there...my knee made it back to its regular position. Doctors and trainers were all tending to my knee...pushing on it, bending it, pressing it...it felt absolutely fine. I was like are you kidding me...I can't believe I was taken off the court because of a stupid knee twist/strain. They had me walk around on it and jog in place...I passed every test that was thrown at me. Doctors and trainers both agreed I was fine...that it seemed that I twisted it and could go back to the bench. I was so relieved...so I sat there trying to understand everything that had just happened. I was sitting there and Coach Sutherland looked at me and said, "Get in there." So here comes my next moment (the moment that was tied to the last moment and would be the END and the BEGINNING of this journey with two paths).

Again, everything was fine...jogged a little during a play...SCORE...teammate scores on the play...THE FANS GO WILD! HOG WILD THAT IS...LOL. And the moment of truth is finally here. Full court press...trapped a girl right away, she passes the ball off...I sprint to my next spot and all of a sudden my whole basketball life flashes right before my eyes. I experienced the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life. As I sprinted...My knee swooshed back and forth as if it was a rubber band that was vibrating back and forth...I collapsed to the floor and had nothing to support me to get up. I remember being so pissed off and realized this deep and intense pain...but was too focused on making sure we stopped the other team from breaking the press. I tried desperately to get up...but couldn't...EVERYTHING WAS OUT OF MY CONTROL. I could do NOTHING to fix this at this moment. They had to carry me off the court again and it was in the training room that they discovered something was seriously wrong. My knee had swelled ten times its regular size in a matter of 15 minutes. The swelling was out of control and nobody was able to make a diagnosis due to the severity of the swelling in my knee.

I am going to make this my first chapter...lol. I don't want to make this blog entry tooo long. I will be sure to write, The Moment My Life Changed Forever Part 2 soon. So be sure to tune in and check out the second part of my story. My message for today is...Be sure to experience each moment that is put in your life...GOOD AND BAD...Each has a contributing factor that will help you BECOME STRONGER and that will help you UNDERSTAND TRULY WHO YOU ARE.

Understanding Yourself

Learn as much about YOU as you possibly can. Experience all emotions that shape YOU...joy, sadness, pleasure, and pain. Know and understand YOURSELF. Open all doors and allow life to flow through. Believe in yourself and be content with yourself...but most importantly, ACCEPT YOURSELF.

Just remember to allow life to live through YOU and remember that to get the most out of life lies simply in your decision to live your life with the principle of balance and to learn to cooperate with the natural patterns of our world. Let your career, relationships, and daily activities be harmonious expressions of who YOU truly are.

The Four Winds Of Feelings

At every given moment, we have a jet stream of feelings operating below our conscious awareness. By bringing these feelings into consciousness, we begin to acquaint ourselves more fully with our deeper selves, and increase our capacity for joy by experiencing the full range of our feelings. For if we cut ourselves off from any feelings, we cut ourselves off from the capacity to feel all the others as well. To truly know our joy, we must also know our anger, our sadness. It's an all-or-nothing arrangement.

Because so many of us are cut off from our feelings (or at least some of our feelings), it is important to know "the four winds of feelings." It requires answering four questions: What am I happy about? What am I sad about? What am I angry about? What am I afraid of? Try and see if you can connect with the full richness of your feelings.

Three Powerful Words

Three powerful words that have always meant so much to me..."FINISH THE FIGHT!"  I have always liked these words together because I think everyone can relate to them in one way or another. FINISH CAN MEAN: DON'T EVER GIVE UP...FINISH WHAT YOU START NO MATTER WHAT...END SOMETHING TO BEGIN ANOTHER...COMPLETE ANY TASK AT HAND...OVERCOME ANY OBSTACLE YOU MAY FACE...NEVER GIVE IN AND FOLD...COURAGE TO DO WHAT YOU ARE AFRAID TO DO. You need to understand that the word FINISH will apply to you and your life. What does FINISH mean to you?

THE FIGHT CAN MEAN 1,000 THINGS...NUTRITION DIFFICULTIES.... REACHING LONG-TERM GOALS... FEAR OF CHANGE...MAINTAINING FITNESS CHALLENGES/GOALS...TO WIN THE BATTLE...LOVING YOURSELF...TEMPTATION...FEELINGS OF LONLINESS...LOW SELF ESTEEM. So again, THE FIGHT applies to you in so many ways and some of us may have more than one FIGHT. What is your FIGHT?

So keep these three words close to you and pass them along to everyone. I want everyone to FINISH THEIR FIGHT with whatever it is. I love being able to share my passion and my love for fitness and life with you. SO DON'T FORGET THESE THREE WORDS...WRITE THEM DOWN ON EVERYTHING, PASS IT ALONG TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY, REMIND YOURSELF EVERYDAY ABOUT FINISHING YOUR FIGHT!

Advance Your Overall Life Purpose

Things that will advance YOU...
-Things you have always wanted to do.
-Things that others say can't be done.
-Things that help you grow to your maximum potential.
-Things that develop other people's ability to achieve and lead.

DEFINITION OF EXERCISES/LANGUAGE IN EXERCISE

1) Straight-legged to Heels-to-Butt Sit-ups- lie flat on the ground with your legs straight and your hands on your head. As you start to do a sit-up bring your heels in to your butt and tap the floor (*the closer the heels come to the butt the harder). As you come out of your sit-up and begin to roll-down straighten out your legs and make sure the heels touch the floor. It should be a smooth, contolled one motion.
2) Burpee In Place-start by jumping straight in the air and then landing in a squat position with hands on the ground. Kick your feet back into the downward position of a push-up. Thrust the feet up and push up with the arms simultaneously.
3) Traveling Forward Burpee- the same concept as the Burpee In Place the only difference is jump forward instead of straight up.
4) Traveling Backward Burpee- the same concept as the Burpee In Place the only difference is jump backward instead of jumping straight up.
5) Burp- also known as a stripped down burpee. Start low and tucked toward the floor. Kick feet out to the bottom portion of a pushup. Then, push with your hands, while thrusting the feet back to the beginnning position (which is low and tucked toward the floor). It is only a half way motion minus without the jump in the air.
6) M.B. or Plate Stand-Ups- lie flat on the ground with your feet planted on the ground. Beginners should use two dumbbells and place on feet. Hold a m.b. or plate over your head (*the heavier the db/plate the easier...the lighter the db/plate or no weight the harder). Quickly move your arms forward and start to sit up. It is very important that you use your arms for momentum and engage your abdominals. Once your arms pass your knees, quickly push forward with your legs, moving into a standing position.
7) Mountain Climbers- start with your body in a push-up plank position. With the hands stationary, alternate the feet back and forth. One leg should be tucked with the knee coming close to your chest and the opposite leg extended. Make sure to place your weight on the balls of the feet.
8) Grasshoppers- your body will begin in the same position you used for mountain climbers. The movement starts by bringing your left foot underneath the body until it touches your right hand. After touching your hand, return the left foot to the starting position and repeat the movement by bringing your right foot across the body to your left hand. You will be on the balls of your feet but when you bring your foot toward your hand you will land on the side of your foot.
9) Wall Sit- place yourself up against a wall and squat down until the thighs are parallel to the floor. Think about forming an L with the bottom portion of your body. Your back is supported against the wall. Hold this position for time. Do not place your hands on your thighs because this takes off the pressure in your legs. Absolutely no movement with this exercise.
10) Bridge- a great exercise that will develop strength and flexibility. It is a static hold that helps improve lower back strength. Start by lying down on the floor with your knees bent and your hands on the floor close to your ears. Lift yourself up with your abdomen pointing upward and with only the hands and the feet on the floor. Your body should create an arched position and you will maintain the upright position for time.
11) Aerobic exercise- means with oxygen. An activity in which demands of muscle for oxygen are met by circulation of oxygen in blood. Distance running, cross-country, skiing, distance cycling are all examples of aerobic activities.
12) Anaerobic Exercise- means without oxygen. Activity in which oxygen demands of muscles are so high that they rely upon an internal metabolic process for oxygen. Short burts of "all-out" activities such as sprinting or weightlifting are examples of anerobic exercises.
13) Burn- also known as "going for the burn." For instance, in endurance exercise, working muscles until lactic acid buildup causes a burning sensation.
14) Concentric- when muscles contract or shorten.
15) Delts- an abbreviation for deltoids, the large triangular muscles of the shoulder which raise the arm away from the body and perform other functions.
16) Eccentric- when muscles lengthen while maintaining tension.
17) Fast-Twitch- refers to muscle cells that fire quickly and are utilized in anaerobic activites like sprinting and powerlifting.
18) Glycogen- can be referred to as a full tank full of stored carbohydrates. Some of it is stored in the liver and some of it is stored in the muscles themselves.
19) Hybrid Lift- is two or more exercise done in one single movement. It is the inverse of a combo lift. For istance, performing a bicep curl while lunging.
20) Interval Training- is a short, high-intensity cardio exercise alternated with longer periods of lower-intensity cardio. It allows you to burn more calories, increase your speed, improve your power, and much more. It is more effective at burning fat while maintaining muscle mass. Combine this type of training with intensity will also increase your metabolic rate to amazing levels. This is because the work you do utilizes a greater percent of the body's muscles.
