One of the most common problems everyone faces at one point or another is the amount of sleep they get. Some people will average about 3-4 hours of sleep per night...others will not be able to fall asleep at a appropriate time due to the mind not shutting off...and others will sleep and wake up several times during the night. All of these examples are not good for anybody. We all know that we must get a good 8 hours of sleep like we did when we were growing up. We take for granted our sleep, but our sleep is probably if not the most important factor for real change within ourselves. Getting a good night rest helps people to be focused and alert for the next day...it allows for recovery and rebuilding in your body...it helps keep your cortisol levels balanced ...and it keeps your immune system strong. In the next paragraph I am going to give you some information about a natural herb that will help you find those good sleeping nights again.
A real happiness killer is not getting enough sleep. Experts say one in four people have trouble sleeping, at least occasionally, and the National Commission on Sleep Disorders estimates that folks spend $16 billion a year trying to sleep. Kava Kava to the rescue. Studies have shown that this South Pacific herb is as effective as Valium or Halcyon, without their side effects. A nightly dose of 150 mg not only cures insomnia in 50 percent of those trying it in as little as seven days, but it also abolishes nervousness and anxiety. Don't exceed the recommended dosage, and stay away from this supplement if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have Parkinson's disease, are taking sedatives such as Valium (it enhances the effect; ditto for alcohol), or are allergic to pepper (it is derived from a pepper tree). Medical advice suggest you shouldn't take it for more than eight weeks at a time.

Resistance Band Training During Squats Boosts Force And Power Output
SO HERE YOU HAVE IT! :)
Movements become ballistic at the end of the range of motion during large, multiple-joint exercises, such as the bench press, squats, and deadlift. In other words, there's less load on the muscles as you get closer to lockout and little motor unit activity in the prime mover muscles (the muscles doing the work). Lifting with resistance bands or chains attached to the bar increases the load at the end of the range of motion.
Australian scientists found that force and power output was greater during back squats performed on a Smith Machine when using resistance bands than during traditional weight training. Also, resistance bands are effective when doing traveling lunges and side shuffles...keeping the tension and force continuously while performing these movements.
They used a force platform to determine the forces created during the exercise. Muscles tend to get larger and stronger when subjected to more tension, so we may infer from this study that training with resistance bands (or chains) is beneficial. It can also be stated that training with resistance bands or chains does increase strength and lean muscle mass more than traditional training methods. SO GOOD NEWS FOR ALL OF THE CLIENTS THAT TRAIN WITH ME...JUDY IS HERE TO STAY!!! LONG LIVE JUDY!!!

Post-Exercise Protein Intake Speeds Tissue Repair
After a hard workout in the gym or on the track, your body must repair damaged tissues using amino acids from protein. Exercise speeds the use of amino acids as fuels, which puts them in short supply during recovery...the time the body repairs and restores itself.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center researchers did a sophisticated study showing that feeding protein (10- 15 grams) and carbs after a endurance exercise increased WHOLE BODY protein synthesis after exercise compared to a placebo. All athletes should eat a high-protein energy bar, protein shake, or a high-protein meal within 30-40 minutes of an intense workout.
So remember, it is SO IMPORTANT to include a post-exercise protein source after each and every one of your workout. It will not only speed up your recovery process, but it will build muscle faster. This is something that definitely works...SO DO IT!!! :)

Repeated Cardio Exercise Bouts Boost Fat Use
Exercise is important for weight control because it burns calories during the activity and raises metabolic rate for hours after the exercise is over. Most people trying to control their weight run on a treadmill, ride a stationary bike or work on an elliptical trainer continuously for 30-60 minutes. There may be a better way.
Japanese scientists found that two 30-minute moderate-intensity aerobics programs with a 20-minute break between sessions burned more fat than one 60-minute exercise session. The researchers compared fat use and hormone levels in people riding a stationary bicycle for 60 minutes continuously, or doing two bouts of 30 minutes separated by 20 minutes of rest between sessions. Two 30-minute bouts of exercise increased fat metabolism, stress hormone levels (i.e., catecholamines) and blood ketone levels (a marker of increased fat use) while lowering insulin and blood sugar more than the continuous 60-minute workout. Burn more fat by splitting your cardio routine.

POST WORKOUT PROTEIN INTAKE SPEEDS TISSUE REPAIR
After a hard workout in a gym or on a track, your body must repair damaged tissues using amino acids from protein. Exercise speeds the use of amino acids as fuels, which puts them in short supply during recovery... the time the body repairs and restores itself.
Vanderbilt University Medical Center researchers did a sophisticated study showing that feeding protein (10 grams) and carbs after endurance exercise increased whole body protein synthesis after exercise compared to a placebo. All athletes should eat a high-protein energy bar, protein shake, or a high-protein meal within 30-45 minutes of an intense workout. This practice will speed recovery and build muscle faster.
Your post-workout meal is one of the most important things you must do in order to recover and in order to see the results you are working hard for. If you are not doing this already, be sure to start, you will see an overall increase in recovery, performance, and body change (results achieved). Thanks for checking out my blog article. Have a good day and HAPPY TRAINING AND DON'T FORGET YOUR POST WORKOUT MEAL! :)

BURN CALORIES BY DRINKING WATER
Water increases calorie burning by diluting the blood going to the liver (portal circulation) and by turning on the sympathetic nervous system (the body's fight-or-flight system). The cells have very sensitive methods for regulating fluids in blood, cells and the space between cells. Water intake activates this system, which increases caloric expenditure. Drinking extra water has little effect on weight control and could be dangerous...just like anything. You must find the right balance that works for you and how water plays into your everyday activities. The 20 calories you expend processing the water is equivalent to jogging for two minutes. But again...don't forget, excessive water intake can cause hyponatremia (water intoxication), which can be deadly.
So remember to stay hydrated each and every day...do not go overboard on your water intake especially if you are not active. Water has and will always be vital to your survival. It participates in almost all the chemical reactions in your body, it helps cool you, and moves vital fuels and hormones to your muscles and tissues. Just be aware that just like anything else...there have been known cases of people drinking too much water and dying from these decisions. BALANCE IS THE KEY TO EVERYTHING IN THIS LIFE! So be ACTIVE and DRINK YOUR WATER!!

A Passion For The Process
FITNESS is a way of life rooted in the deeply held conviction that physical, psychological, and spiritual health are inextricably related. *When you wake up at dawn and EXERCISE it is like an act of devotion. It CENTERS THE MIND for the day to come.*
"Beauty is superficial and fleeting, but health is profound and lasting."
The pursuit of FITNESS is the pursuit of WHOLENESS that can empower each of us to cope with the overwhelming pressures of our day-to-day existence.
Fitness is a lifelong pilgrimage and you must commit yourself to the journey. And those who do will find long-lasting results. Athletes fall into two groups: the believers and the nonbelievers. The nonbelievers just want to win the race, but never seem to enjoy training for it. And the sad thing is that nonbelievers seldom last in the world of fitness. The glory of winning is short-lived.
You must have STAYING POWER and that is exactly what separates the believer from the non-believer. The believer has A PASSION FOR THE PROCESS. They enjoy winning, but they CHERISH THE LIFESTYLE even more.
**The irony: To achieve physical beauty you must LOOK BEYOND IT. If we keep our eyes focused on a particular short-term goal we may achieve it, BUT the victory will only be temporary. YOU MUST BE TRANSFORMED FROM THE INSIDE OUT.
You must have faith and when it comes to fitness, you must make the leap of faith. Trust and recognize that THERE IS NO GROWTH WITHOUT COMMITMENT, and NO COMMITMENT WITHOUT BELIEF. You must keep the FAITH.
One morning a young man in his twenties came in and enrolled at a local gym. Looking around, he saw an older man across the room, working out. His face and physique didn't seem to go together. His gray head was that of a well-kept septuagenarian, but his body seemed grafted on-impossibly young looking. In his sweatpants and tank shirts he exposed arms and shoulders that revealed full, deeply defined muscles covered with smooth, tight skin. There wasn't an ounce of fat on him. Awestruck, the young man walked over to him and said, "You look great, how long have you been working out?" The old man gave him a fierce look and replied, "All my damned life- you are looking at a LIFETIME of working out!"
With the long-term pursuit of fitness, however, weight loss, or fat loss, takes care of itself-automatically. Again, to achieve it you must not pursue it! The object is not to lose weight but to BECOME FIT. You must commit yourself to the journey of fitness, which will bring you rewarding results for a lifetime. You must stop wanting immediate results or a quick turnaround.
You must BELIEVE that if you are on the journey toward fitness, your own lifelong pilgrimage, you will lose fat and gain muscle.
***Always keep in touch with everything that surrounds you...The journey to fitness keeps us in contact with nature. The sights, smells, and sounds of land and water-reminds us of our true relationship to the material world.
Three Words- IMPROVE, INCREASE, CONSISTENT
You have the power to have: improved body chemistry, increased strength and lean muscle mass, consistent weight control, improved cardiovascular health, improved psychological health, improved quality of life.
One problem many face is having an ingrained, deep-seated discomfort with their bodies. We make our living by reading, writing, speaking, and thinking, but seldom by physical labor. The nature of our work is written on our physiques, and the imprint of our sedentary lifestyles can be read in our posture, gait, and carriage. Unfortunately our neglected bodies often serve only as a repository for stress, depression, and illness.
We must seek to restore a sense of INNER PEACE through the pursuit of health and wholeness. Fitness has all the necessary tools to help improve a person's sense of well-being, reduce their stress levels, and make them more productive.
It is important that you have the right mindset in order to achieve and live a healthy life. You can know all the theories in the world, but if you do not have the right mindset, it will do you no good. You need to have FAITH and you must BELIEVE in the intrinsic value of health if you hope to achieve it. If you haven't seen the light, if you're not a convert, you will fail. I BELIEVE IN YOU AND I BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING YOU SET YOUR MIND TO. Never give up and don't give in. You are stronger and nothing should stand in your way. And when you face challenges and obstacles you have a hidden power rooted in your inner self to overcome.
Like I have said before, YOU are the one, YOU are the captain of your ship, YOU lead the way, but most importantly, YOU ARE THE FOOTPRINTS THAT LEAD YOU ON YOUR JOURNEY.

Know True Love And True Peace
The MIND- what a powerful tool, but yet a tool that has the power to work against you. The more and more I experience and the more and more I read...the more the message is about trying to have a MIND that is attached to nothing. Your attachments could be leading you in the wrong direction and could be the source of many of your problems. For instance, the NEED to be right, to POSSESS someone or something, to WIN at all costs, to be VIEWED by others as superior...these are all attachments that may seem to be okay on the surface but problematic within.
It is important to understand that in order to release attachments, you must make a shift in HOW YOU VIEW YOURSELF. For example, if your primary identification is with your body and your possessions, your ego is the dominant force in your life. Now this is where it is important...if you can tame your ego sufficiently, you'll call upon your spirit to be the guiding force in your life. As a spiritual being, you can observe your body and be a compassionate witness to your existence. Read the next paragraph and embrace the thought process.
If you think peaceful thoughts, you'll feel peaceful emotions, and that's what you'll bring to every life situation. If your attached to being right or absolutely need something in order to be at peace or to be successful, you'll live a life of striving yet never arriving.
Now understand, it is possible to have a burning desire yet not have attachments. "Infinite patience produces immediate results." Understand that infinite patience implies an absolute certainty that what you would like to manifest will indeed show up, in perfect order, and exactly on time. The immediate result you receive from this inner knowing is a sense of peace.
So say you have been given a choice between TWO MAGIC WANDS. The first wand gives you the power to have any physical thing you desire (guarantee of stuff) by simply waving it. The second wand gives you a sense of peace for the rest of your life regardless of what circumstances arise.
I want you to really take a moment and think about which wand you would choose. This is not a trick question, just be honest with yourself. Remember, there is no wrong answer...this question is just giving you an outlook on every possibility. Like I said there is no wrong answer, but the difference between the two magic wands is that the second wand simply allows you to have a mind that is open to everything but attached to nothing. It allows you to let it all come and go as it will. It is important that you enjoy it all (everything around you), but never make your happiness or success DEPENDENT on an attachment to any thing, any place, and particularly, any person.
They say that in all your relationships, if you can love someone enough to allow them to be exactly what they choose to be-without any expectations or attachments from you- YOU WILL KNOW TRUE PEACE IN YOUR LIFETIME. TRUE LOVE means you love a person for WHAT THEY ARE, NOT FOR WHAT YOU THINK THEY SHOULD BE....and this is AN ABSENCE OF ATTACHMENT!

Practice Makes Permanent
A WORKOUT is 25% PERSPIRATION and 75% DETERMINATION...One part PHYSICAL EXERTION and three parts SELF DISCIPLINE. Doing IT is easy, once you get started.
A WORKOUT is a personal triumph over laziness and procrastination. It is the BADGE OF A WINNER- the mark of an organized, goal oriented person who has taken CHARGE of their DESTINY!
A WORKOUT is a key that helps unlock the door to OPPORTUNITY AND SUCCESS. Hidden within each of us is an EXTRAORDINARY FORCE.
A WORKOUT makes you better today then you were yesterday. It STRENGTHENS the BODY, RELAXES the MIND, and TOUGHENS the SPIRIT. When you workout regularly, your problems diminish and your confidence grows.
A WORKOUT is a wise use of time and an investment in EXCELLENCE. It is a way of preparing for LIFE'S CHALLENGES and PROVING TO YOURSELF that you have what it takes to do what is necessary.
Preventive Solutions
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
We all know about intensity and we all know what comes with that intensity...muscles that are tight, tired, and sore. It is important that you are aware of the things your body is facing and do the little things to prevent yourself from getting injured.
One of the best preventive solutions is gradual stretching. Stretching involves the entire muscle/tendon complex, lengthening it so that the chance of an exercise movement's suddenly stretching these structures past their limits and causing damage is reduced. Another preventive solution is warming up before you workout. Warming up pumps blood and oxygen to the area and literally raises the temperature of the muscles involved, allowing them to contract with greater force.

BOTH SIDES UP
Exercise balls have been around for more than 100 years. The balls that can turn simple exercises such as crunches into core-building exercises that work many of the major muscle groups of the body. Why are exercise balls so effective? They are effective because you must stabilize your entire body to do the exercises.
The BOSU Ball (a half ball mounted on a platform) has some similar properties as a regular exercise ball. What makes this piece of equipment so unique is that it also requires muscle power for balance, but provides enough stability so that you feel comfortable and don't get injured. This piece of equipment helps build strength and endurance in the major muscles of your legs and trunk that will tone you up and prevent back pain. The BOSU can be the ultimate challenging exercise tool...you can challenge yourself by doing several upper and lower body exercises on both sides of the BOSU Ball...each side has a different component (one side being soft and where the half ball is located/the flip side being hard...the black platform side) that makes each exercise different, unique, and challenging.
Always mix things up. If you haven't tried using a BOSU Ball...give it a try. There are so many possibilities available to you when you use this unique piece of equipment.

Get On That Treadmill
Do you want to burn loads of calories but don't have much time? Well, here is a solution for you...try treadmill walking or running up an incline. Going up hills burns calories at an incredible rate. For example, say you have a 160-pound man walking on a level treadmill at a leisurely pace of 2.5 miles per hour, which uses 4 calories per minute. That balloons to nearly 7 calories per minute when walking at the same speed up to a 10 percent grade and a whooping 10 calories per minute when walking up a 20 percent grade. Walking up small inclines increases the energy cost between 75 and 250 percent. Just as with any exercise, always start off conservatively and increase the incline and treadmill speed gradually. Increasing the grade on the treadmill- the world's most popular cardio machine- will help you melt the fat away while building nicely muscled legs. You have nothing to lose...so get on that treadmill and watch your body change. :)

Your Body Is Beautiful
I want to start this blog post by using a quote from Helen Keller, that was passed along to me from a very special friend of mine. I want to first thank this person from the bottom of my heart for everything they have done and continue to do for me. They are truly an example of what makes a true friend...someone you can count on and who will do the smallest thing to make you feel so special. There are not very many people in this world that carry this genuine and caring spirit, so it is very uplifting when you have someone like this in your life. I feel very lucky and fortunate to have the opportunity to have a friend like this in my life. Soooooo thank you so much for all of your encouraging words, for believing in me as a person and as a trainer, and most importantly for being my friend. I don't want to put this person on the spot BUT they know who they are! Thanks so much! You are truly the best.
"Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved." -Helen Keller
**I can not touch this quote. It hits everything right on the head. It is amazing to really be inspired by words and really put the things you experience in your life in perspective. An amazing feeling when you can OVERCOME!
There are many problems when tackling the issues of nutrition and society. Most people in our society eat too much food and along with that they tend to eat the wrong foods. Many individuals are undernourished, but we can not forget the flip side to this dilemma. There are also a lot of people in our society that do not eat enough food and the foods that they do eat are not good nutritious ones. They too are undernourished.
Most of the foods we do eat are added with chemicals and additives and are not natural for human consumption, and many have been shown to cause serious health issues. I can go on and on about the negative sides and facts about nutrition, but the bottom line is what is "your" solution to the problems you face when it comes to nutrition.
For one, you must begin by thinking positively and become optimistic with your food choices. You must understand that food is fuel for the body. In order for a car to run it needs gas...same concept goes for your body. In order for your body to function and perform, you must be fueling it and choosing the right foods to help it grow strong and be healthy.
Below is some basic tips and strategies that you can apply to a lifelong nutritional plan. Your diet must provide an optimal mix of PROTEIN, CARBOHYDRATES, FATS, VITAMINS, and MINERALS.
1. Protein is a component of every cell in the body. It is essential in BUILDING, REPAIRING, AND MAINTAINING BONES, MUSCLES, CARTILAGE, SKIN, AND BLOOD.
2. Carbohydrates are the most efficient form of energy for the BODY and BRAIN.
3. Fats are essential for cell membranes, hormones, and prostaglandins. It enables the body to produce HEALTHY HAIR, SKIN, and NAILS. It also serves as a transfer for vitamins A, D, E, and K.
4. Vitamins are an organic chemical compound necessary for growth, metabolism, and health.
5. Minerals are inorganic substances not produced by the body, which are required for proper bodily function.
One rule of thumb from me to you is to not count calories or nutrient ratios. Food consumptions should not become a chore. The best thing you can do is to keep it simple. Try to eat natural, wholesome foods...they will provide you with a perfect blend of essential nutrients. Just like I tell all of my clients, simply eat well-balanced meals and apply commonsense with the choices you make.
Helpful tips to remember:
1. Choose foods in there natural state...come as close to natural as possible.
2. Consume a small meal every couple of hours. By spreading your intake throughout your day, you will maintain a steady supply of energy. You will also keep your METABOLISM working throughout your day.
3. Always listen to your body. Your body will tell you when it needs food, but you must know when to stop eating. Your goal is to not stuff yourself full.
4. Always read food labels. Careful with items that are loaded with chemical ingredients and are impossible to pronounce.
5. Consume water as your primary beverage. Careful with sodas and juices. Fruit juice is high in sugar and often comes from poor quality, highly processed fruit.
6. Avoid all artificial and chemical sweeteners. For example, if you drink coffee, consume it without sweeteners. Sweeteners have been linked to numerous illnesses.
7. Consume natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes, organic whole wheat grains, brown rice, nuts (walnuts, almonds, pecans), chicken and eggs, and beef.
So make a change if you haven't already and really pay attention to what you put in your body. You truly are what you eat. And 80 percent of any change in the body comes from your nutrition. You can spend 18 hours a week in the gym and never make a change. Treat your body as your temple, the place that holds the key to success in health and in life. Respect your body, it will work hard for you if you do the things that are essential to achieve ultimate success. KEEP MOTIVATED AND TELL YOURSELF EVERY DAY....YOU ARE WHAT YOU DO! YOU ARE IMPORTANT. YOUR BODY IS BEAUTIFUL.

One Of The Fastest Ways To Build Up Your Fitness
So who wants to trim their legs, build muscle tone, and develop the muscle of a racehorse...IN RECORD TIME? That is what I thought...EVERYONE SEEMS TO WANT THIS, WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO BUILD UP THEIR FITNESS FAST.
One of the best ways to do this is to add interval training to your fitness regimen. It will help you burn more calories than normal workouts and will definitely STOKE UP your metabolism for the rest of the day and night. So what exactly is interval training? Interval training is bouts of higher intensity exercise interspersed with periods of lower intensity exercise or rest. And my clients will definitely tell you, I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT LIKE TO REST BETWEEN SETS.
Interval training manipulates repetitions, speed, distance, and of course MY FAVORITE, REST! :) For example, you could run six sets of 400 meters on a track in 100 seconds, with 3 minutes rest between sets. Run more slowly for longer distances to build endurance and shorter distances faster to build speed and power. You may even spice it up (ALWAYS BE CREATIVE) and incorporate the two. You can do interval workouts for walking, running, cycling, swimming, rowing, and indoor weight training.
So your PLAN OF ACTION is to incorporate the full package in one...maybe include some side shuffles during your walk or a plyometric exercise after so many minutes...remember you can choose different reps, speed, and distance. Try hard not to rest to much between rounds of exercises, that way you burn more calories and you begin teaching your body to train hard. Remember, everyone is different...everyone is at different fitness levels. Don't go full force if you are just beginning an exercise regimen or if you have an injury you are dealing with. Go at your level and work up from there. DO NOT COMPARE YOURSELF TO ANYONE ELSE. Do what is right for YOU and for YOUR BODY! But most importantly, HAVE FUN.

Figure Out Your Weaknesses
****Training starts with your mind.****
It is a true statement when you hear that 'knowledge equals power.' Think of your body as a computer- all computers can solve math problems, play games and music, connect to the internet and send e-mails. The difference is that some of these computers are more powerful or faster at doing these tasks than others.
"When it comes to our bodies, we all digest protein and carbs the same way, and we all send the same type of signal to our muscles when we want them to contract and lift a weight. The difference is that some us are more efficient at it than others, which means that some may be able to tone faster, lose weight faster, or more prone to build mass faster. The knowledge behind all of this is to figure out where your weaknesses are, and fill them in with training, nutrition and supplements in order to even the playing field.
THE MUSCLE
What is a muscle? Muscles will contract, produce force, which will shorten the distance between two or more bones. Remember, training starts with the mind, the confidence to exercise intensely and the mental desire to get better every day. It is the brain that sends your muscles an electrical signal to fire and contract. A powerful frame of mind will definitely equal intensity. Once your brain sends the signal for your muscles to contract the signal shoots to its destination through the nervous system in order to trigger the release of calcium into the appropriate muscle fibers. This in turn will change the electrical charge in the fibers, allowing the muscle to contract. The most amazing thing is that muscle fibers contract on a need to use basis, and the stronger the signal coming from the brain, the more fibers you will contract, resulting in tremendous changes in your body. So understand how your muscles work and know what YOU can do to get better! I want this for each and everyone of you. It all starts from you and only YOU! Understand your body, but most importantly understand your weaknesses! Go for it and don't let anything stand in your way!

Your Action Plan To Nutrition Part 3
You must start your journey to overall health by listening to your body. Your body is the key to everything...it is your temple. It is important that we take a deeper look at what is happening...we must find solutions to heal and to grow into healthy individuals. It is through the concept of wholeness and remembering that everything is connected. It is time to take responsibility for what we put in our mouths each and every day...so we can create and maintain a strong foundation in our bodies. Instead of listening to gimmicks or philosophies on nutrition...listen to your body and your mind.
In Part 1 and Part 2, I discussed the importance to being mentally present and motivated when starting your nutrition action plan. Also, I discussed the understanding of portion sizes and how you must choose a nutrition plan that applies to you as an individual and applies to your fitness goals. Make sure you read Part 1 and Part 2 before you continue on to Action Plan Part 3.
I now want to discuss the food groups that must be present in your nutrition plan. Most of the foods we eat contain a combination of three energy-producing nutrients, also known as macro nutrients- protein, carbohydrates, and fat. These nutrients are responsible for providing the energy necessary for you body's engine to run well, and very essential to your health. Along with these nutrients, your body also needs vitamins, minerals, and water...which will be discussed later.
The first food group I want to discuss is the most versatile player on the nutrient team, PROTEIN...the building blocks for muscle tissue. Its purpose is to build, repair, and maintain your body's tissues, including muscles, skin, and internal organs. Protein helps you digest food and tells the body whether to store food as energy versus fat. It helps you burn calories, keeps you feeling full, and helps your body build muscle and burn fat. It is an interesting path on how the body operates, but know that the body burns more calories digesting protein than it does to process carbohydrates and fat.
Protein is made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and one more element none of the other nutrients have-nitrogen. Proteins take much longer to digest and are broken down into their smallest components, amino acids. Understand that in order for your body to use the protein you ingest for muscle-building, all necessary amino acids must be present. The body can only produce only some of these amino acids. Amino acids, for the most part, do not stimulate insulin secretion like a simple carbohydrate (piece of fruit or candy bar) would. The others, which are also known as your essential amino acids, must be from the foods we eat.
Protein is supplied by both animal and plant foods, including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, nuts, and grain products. It is important that you concentrate on the proteins that best helps build your muscles. Research has shown that animal protein builds muscle better than soy or vegetable protein does. For example, choose poultry, fish, and lean cuts of beef or pork over tofu and other soy-based products.
It is important that you get enough protein in your daily food intake. A great starting point/average protein intake is about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day- that is about the amount of protein your body can use every day. For example, a 130-pound woman will take in 130 grams of protein in her day. You must understand that exercise frequency and intensity also would play a role in the amount of protein you want to take in. Also, if you are getting ready for a sport event or a fitness/figure/bodybuilding competition you would consume more protein. The average is around 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight per day, but you can increase to 1.5 grams of protein if needed. Special circumstances and situations will allow for an individual to increase to even 2 grams of protein per pound of body weight.
It is also very important to have a well-balanced eating plan and to have a little protein with each meal. When a carbohydrate is eaten in COMBINATION WITH a protein (well-balance), it becomes a new source of energy on a molecular level. This combination allows less glucose to enter the bloodstream, and it is released over a longer duration of time. This then lowers your insulin level so your body can burn the carbohydrate as FUEL as opposed to storing them as fat. Also, by eating a little protein at every meal, you will reduce your cravings for certain foods.
It is crucial that you understand how certain foods work in your body. When you eat sugar or a carbohydrate alone, it raises/spikes your insulin levels, BUT WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN! So when your insulin level drops, it creates a craving for more sugar or carbohydrates for immediate energy because now you are feeling tired and lethargic. But the solution is when you eat a little protein with each meal, it forces the secretion of glucagon (the hormone that stimulates insulin secretion), your insulin level balances out so your body doesn't go through the insulin roller-coaster ride. The END RESULT is a sustained, well-balanced energy level throughout your day.
Also, it has been proven that reducing your carbohydrate intake to a minimum and earthing a high-protein eating plan is too extreme and unrealistic in the long term. So why is the fad of high-protein diets in every fitness magazine and every other commercial? Studies have shown that high-protein diets elicit a certain hormonal response that facilitates rapid weight loss by putting the body into a state of ketosis. Ketosis is an abnormal increase of acidic biochemicals in the blood and urine and a sign that the metabolism is impaired. These acidic biochemicals are produced when there isn't enough glucose in the bloodstream. High levels of ketones make blood abnormally acidic. I don't think any of you would agree that this is a very healthy way of life!
The reason high-protein diets have been so successful is because INITIALLY (key word) many people see rapid weight loss due to the body being shocked into doing this, but they EVENTUALLY (next key word) will hit a plateau. It is important to note that people on high-protein diets cannot sustain this way of eating for longer than three to six months. So then what happens next. The sad thing I have seen is that all the effort they put into a high-protein diet ends up backfiring on them. Most people will go back to their old way of eating, many will end up where they started, while others will take a turn for the worse and put on more weight then they started with.
There are three important factors you must take into consideration with high-protein diets. First, they are hard to maintain. Second, they are typically high in saturated fat, which will EVENTUALLY (same key word) contribute to clogged arteries and an increased risk of heart attacks. And last but not least, there is not enough long-term studies to prove that eating a high-protein diet is safe for you. You must fully understand that a HIGHER-PROTEIN DIET is different from a HIGH-PROTEIN DIET (one that dramatically reduces carbohydrates)- due to long-term studies showing that they have a greater success rate in reducing body fat and maintaining weight loss in the long term.
Through my experience with my own body and as a personal trainer, I believe that a HIGHER-PROTEIN diet works very well for approximately 75% of the population for weight reduction and weight management. It is also important to note that by including a higher-protein in our daily eating plan we feel fuller faster so we ingest less calories per meal. In Part 4 of this Action Plan to Nutrition, I will begin the blog entry by listing and describing the proteins that you want to include in your daily intake, along with the vitamins and nutrients attached to these proteins.

Suspension Of Consciousness
I often here my clients say they are unable to sleep because of the hundred thoughts that are crowding their brain or that they are able to go to sleep just fine, but then wake up some time in the middle of the night- when your brain flashes on like a thousand-watt bulb and can either not go back to sleep or sleep on the our. Below is a list of helpful tricks you may want to try to help you cope with the loss of sleep.
1. Turn the clock around so you can't see what time it is. (Knowing only makes you more anxious)
2. Read something boring (this example always makes me smile big), a dense history book filled with dates or a computer manual.
3. Make a list of the thoughts running through your head...so then you can let them go.
4. (My favorite) Leave your thoughts by concentrating on your heartbeat and listening to every breath.
Bottom line: Everyone handles stress differently...everyone sleeps differently. Figure out what works for you and embrace it. That is what life is all about discovering, exploring, understanding, and becoming. So find your way and if one trick doesn't work, then keep trying. Never give up on YOU and YOUR SLEEP!

DEFINITION OF EXERCISES/LANGUAGE IN EXERCISE
1) Straight-legged to Heels-to-Butt Sit-ups- lie flat on the ground with your legs straight and your hands on your head. As you start to do a sit-up bring your heels in to your butt and tap the floor (*the closer the heels come to the butt the harder). As you come out of your sit-up and begin to roll-down straighten out your legs and make sure the heels touch the floor. It should be a smooth, contolled one motion.
2) Burpee In Place-start by jumping straight in the air and then landing in a squat position with hands on the ground. Kick your feet back into the downward position of a push-up. Thrust the feet up and push up with the arms simultaneously.
3) Traveling Forward Burpee- the same concept as the Burpee In Place the only difference is jump forward instead of straight up.
4) Traveling Backward Burpee- the same concept as the Burpee In Place the only difference is jump backward instead of jumping straight up.
5) Burp- also known as a stripped down burpee. Start low and tucked toward the floor. Kick feet out to the bottom portion of a pushup. Then, push with your hands, while thrusting the feet back to the beginnning position (which is low and tucked toward the floor). It is only a half way motion minus without the jump in the air.
6) M.B. or Plate Stand-Ups- lie flat on the ground with your feet planted on the ground. Beginners should use two dumbbells and place on feet. Hold a m.b. or plate over your head (*the heavier the db/plate the easier...the lighter the db/plate or no weight the harder). Quickly move your arms forward and start to sit up. It is very important that you use your arms for momentum and engage your abdominals. Once your arms pass your knees, quickly push forward with your legs, moving into a standing position.
7) Mountain Climbers- start with your body in a push-up plank position. With the hands stationary, alternate the feet back and forth. One leg should be tucked with the knee coming close to your chest and the opposite leg extended. Make sure to place your weight on the balls of the feet.
8) Grasshoppers- your body will begin in the same position you used for mountain climbers. The movement starts by bringing your left foot underneath the body until it touches your right hand. After touching your hand, return the left foot to the starting position and repeat the movement by bringing your right foot across the body to your left hand. You will be on the balls of your feet but when you bring your foot toward your hand you will land on the side of your foot.
9) Wall Sit- place yourself up against a wall and squat down until the thighs are parallel to the floor. Think about forming an L with the bottom portion of your body. Your back is supported against the wall. Hold this position for time. Do not place your hands on your thighs because this takes off the pressure in your legs. Absolutely no movement with this exercise.
10) Bridge- a great exercise that will develop strength and flexibility. It is a static hold that helps improve lower back strength. Start by lying down on the floor with your knees bent and your hands on the floor close to your ears. Lift yourself up with your abdomen pointing upward and with only the hands and the feet on the floor. Your body should create an arched position and you will maintain the upright position for time.
11) Aerobic exercise- means with oxygen. An activity in which demands of muscle for oxygen are met by circulation of oxygen in blood. Distance running, cross-country, skiing, distance cycling are all examples of aerobic activities.
12) Anaerobic Exercise- means without oxygen. Activity in which oxygen demands of muscles are so high that they rely upon an internal metabolic process for oxygen. Short burts of "all-out" activities such as sprinting or weightlifting are examples of anerobic exercises.
13) Burn- also known as "going for the burn." For instance, in endurance exercise, working muscles until lactic acid buildup causes a burning sensation.
14) Concentric- when muscles contract or shorten.
15) Delts- an abbreviation for deltoids, the large triangular muscles of the shoulder which raise the arm away from the body and perform other functions.
16) Eccentric- when muscles lengthen while maintaining tension.
17) Fast-Twitch- refers to muscle cells that fire quickly and are utilized in anaerobic activites like sprinting and powerlifting.
18) Glycogen- can be referred to as a full tank full of stored carbohydrates. Some of it is stored in the liver and some of it is stored in the muscles themselves.
19) Hybrid Lift- is two or more exercise done in one single movement. It is the inverse of a combo lift. For istance, performing a bicep curl while lunging.
20) Interval Training- is a short, high-intensity cardio exercise alternated with longer periods of lower-intensity cardio. It allows you to burn more calories, increase your speed, improve your power, and much more. It is more effective at burning fat while maintaining muscle mass. Combine this type of training with intensity will also increase your metabolic rate to amazing levels. This is because the work you do utilizes a greater percent of the body's muscles.
2) Burpee In Place-start by jumping straight in the air and then landing in a squat position with hands on the ground. Kick your feet back into the downward position of a push-up. Thrust the feet up and push up with the arms simultaneously.
